Kurinuki Cup Nº11 is a hand-carved sculptural ceramic cup crafted using the Japanese kurinuki technique. It features an abstract, painterly surface with bold strokes in blues, browns, and blacks against a light beige clay body.

Unlike other pottery techniques, kurinuki begins with a solid block of clay. Each cup is slowly carved from a single mass of stoneware, allowing the form to emerge through subtraction rather than addition. This intuitive process creates textured, sculptural surfaces and organic asymmetry, as the material and hands guide its character. No two pieces are exactly alike.

Crafted from light beige stoneware, the exterior remains unglazed, carefully burnished (polished) to ensure comfortable use while preserving its raw character. With regular use, the exterior gradually becomes even softer to the touch. The painted surface is enriched with accents of locally collected wild clay and sand. The interior and rim are finished with a clear glaze.

Each cup is individually numbered within the limited Nº11 series.

Not recommended to use in a dishwasher – the wild clay decoration may be damaged. Do not use harsh metal sponges for cleaning.

Product care

Ondou pieces are crafted as functional art objects. While made from high-fired stoneware fired to 1220 °C — which makes them highly durable and resistant to everyday wear — they are still ceramic and can break if dropped or subjected to strong impact. With proper care, they will last for many years.
GENERAL CARE
– Avoid sudden temperature changes (thermal shock). For example, do not pour boiling water into a cup that has been stored in the fridge, and avoid running cold water over a very hot piece.
– Wash using a soft sponge and mild detergent. Avoid abrasive metal scrubbers, especially on decorated or textured surfaces.
– Do not leave pieces soaking in a sink with food residues for extended periods — basic good hygiene. OPTIONAL DEEP CARE
– If light surface staining from dark liquids appears and you wish to gently refresh the surface, you may soak the piece in rice-washing water (the starchy water from rinsing rice), cold or warm. The natural starches can help draw out minor impurities, giving the surface a subtly smoother feel. This traditional method is gentle and not permanent, but can help maintain the appearance of ceramics over time.

Dishwasher safe?

Not recommended – the wild clay decoration may be damaged.

Microwave safe?

Not recommended – clay is a highly conductive material and the piece will become very hot to the touch.

Handmade nature

Each item is handmade and shows the marks of this process, including intentional “imperfections.” The products pictured reflect the overall shape, size and color of the piece. However, each item is unique, with differences in glaze, texture and slight variations in size, shape and capacity. Colors may also appear differently depending on lighting conditions and your screen. Dimensional variations can be up to ~1cm, capacity ~50ml, and weight ~50g.
