Kurinuki Cup Nº16 is a hand-carved sculptural ceramic cup crafted using the Japanese kurinuki technique. It features expressive carving and a spontaneous matte white glaze, creating a wabi-sabi surface unique to each piece.

Unlike other pottery techniques, kurinuki begins with a solid block of clay. Each cup is slowly carved from a single mass of porous dark brown stoneware, allowing the form to emerge through subtraction rather than addition. This intuitive process creates textured, sculptural surfaces and organic asymmetry, as the material and hands guide its character. No two pieces are exactly alike.

The natural porosity of the brown stoneware clay creates variations in glaze thickness: some areas become semi-transparent, while others develop a softly bubbled matte texture. Though the glaze may appear thinner in spots, the cup is fully waterproof due to the high-fired stoneware. This surface requires careful handling; see product care information below.

Each cup is individually numbered within the limited Nº16 series.

Product care

Ondou pieces are crafted as functional art objects. While made from high-fired stoneware fired to 1220 °C — which makes them highly durable and resistant to everyday wear — they are still ceramic and can break if dropped or subjected to strong impact. With proper care, they will last for many years.
GENERAL CARE
– Avoid sudden temperature changes (thermal shock). For example, do not pour boiling water into a cup that has been stored in the fridge, and avoid running cold water over a very hot piece.
– Wash using a soft sponge and mild detergent. Avoid abrasive metal scrubbers.
– Do not leave pieces soaking in a sink with food residues for extended periods — basic good hygiene.
– Allow the piece to dry fully before storing in a closed cabinet.
OPTIONAL DEEP CARE
This design features more porous surface. Over time, light surface staining from liquids may occur. To refresh the surface, the piece can be soaked in rice-washing water (the starchy water from rinsing rice), either cold or warm. The natural starches help draw out minor impurities and may subtly smooth the surface. This traditional method is gentle and non-permanent, but can help maintain the appearance of ceramics over time.
Alternatively, the surface can be gently cleaned using baking soda.

Handmade nature

Each item is handmade and shows the marks of this process, including intentional “imperfections.” The products pictured reflect the overall shape, size and color of the piece. However, each item is unique, with differences in glaze, texture and slight variations in size, shape and capacity. Colors may also appear differently depending on lighting conditions and your screen. Dimensional variations can be up to ~1cm, capacity ~50ml, and weight ~50g.
