Kurinuki Matcha Bowl Nº10 is a hand-carved, sculptural ceramic bowl crafted using the Japanese kurinuki technique. Carved from anthracite black stoneware, it has a slightly heavier feel compared to the brown stoneware bowls in the collection, emphasizing its materiality and sculptural nature.

The exterior of this bowl is unglazed and deeply carved, with visible tool marks that trace the process. The surface is burnished (polished), giving the raw clay a soft, subtle sheen while preserving its tactile character. Inside and along the rim, a thick, luxurious glaze shifts between deep red and black metallic tones.

Inspired by traditional matcha bowls, it is designed for both whisking and sipping (without a spout), inviting a moment of pause — to observe its textures, decoration, and form, and to settle into presence before the first sip.

The bowl has a half-cylindrical shape (hantsutsu-gata chawan), with straighter sides and a flatter bottom, making it easier to whisk matcha.

It is marked on the base with its design number.

What is kurinuki?

Unlike other pottery techniques, kurinuki begins with a solid block of clay. The bowl is slowly carved from a single mass of stoneware, allowing the form to emerge through subtraction rather than addition. This intuitive process creates textured, sculptural surfaces and organic asymmetry, as the material and hands guide its character.

Product care

Ondou pieces are crafted as functional art objects. While made from high-fired stoneware fired to 1220 °C — which makes them highly durable and resistant to everyday wear — they are still ceramic and can break if dropped or subjected to strong impact. With proper care, they will last for many years.
GENERAL CARE
– Avoid sudden temperature changes (thermal shock). For example, do not pour boiling water into a cup that has been stored in the fridge, and avoid running cold water over a very hot piece.
– Wash using a soft sponge and mild detergent. Avoid abrasive metal scrubbers, especially on decorated or textured surfaces.
– Do not leave pieces soaking in a sink with food residues for extended periods — basic good hygiene.
– Allow the piece to dry fully before storing in a closed cabinet.

Dishwasher safe?

Yes, but hand-washing is recommended. Dishwashers and harsh detergents won't break the item itself, but they can gradually soften or wear down the decoration and alter its original finish. Use at your own discretion.

Microwave safe?

Not recommended – clay is a highly conductive material and the piece will become very hot to the touch.
