Kurinuki Matcha Bowl Nº11 is a hand-carved, sculptural ceramic bowl crafted using the Japanese kurinuki technique. Carved from anthracite black stoneware, it has a slightly heavier presence compared to the brown stoneware bowls in the collection, emphasizing its materiality and sculptural nature.

The exterior of this bowl is partly unglazed and decorated with a mix of wild clays collected across Lithuania. Fired without additional glaze on the exterior, these materials create a subtle sheen, gentle texture, and natural variations in tone. The interior is finished in a matte beige-brown glaze with a stone-like feel.

Inspired by traditional matcha bowls, it is designed for both whisking and sipping (without a spout), inviting a moment of pause — to observe its textures, decoration, and form, and to settle into presence before the first sip.

The bowl has a half-cylindrical shape (hantsutsu-gata chawan), with straighter sides and a flatter bottom, making it easier to whisk matcha.

It is marked on the base with its design number.

What is kurinuki?

Unlike other pottery techniques, kurinuki begins with a solid block of clay. The bowl is slowly carved from a single mass of stoneware, allowing the form to emerge through subtraction rather than addition. This intuitive process creates textured, sculptural surfaces and organic asymmetry, as the material and hands guide its character.

Special care piece. Please refer to the care instructions below, as the wild clay surfaces benefit from mindful handling.

Product care

Ondou pieces are crafted as functional art objects. While made from high-fired stoneware fired to 1220 °C — which makes them highly durable and resistant to everyday wear — they are still ceramic and can break if dropped or subjected to strong impact. With proper care, they will last for many years.
GENERAL CARE
– Avoid sudden temperature changes (thermal shock). For example, do not pour boiling water into a cup that has been stored in the fridge, and avoid running cold water over a very hot piece.
– Wash using a soft sponge and mild detergent. Avoid abrasive metal scrubbers, especially on decorated or textured surfaces.
– Do not leave pieces soaking in a sink with food residues for extended periods — basic good hygiene.
– Allow the piece to dry fully before storing in a closed cabinet.

OPTIONAL DEEP CARE
– Over time, the porous and/or surfaces with crazing lines may develop light staining from dark liquids. To refresh the surface, the piece can be soaked in rice-washing water (the starchy water from rinsing rice), either cold or warm. The natural starches help draw out minor impurities and subtly smooth the surface. This traditional method is gentle and non-permanent, but can help maintain the appearance of ceramics over time. Alternatively, the surface can be gently cleaned using baking soda.

Dishwasher safe?

Hand-washing is recommended. Dishwashers and harsh detergents won't break the item itself, but they can gradually soften or wear down the wild clay decoration and alter its original finish.

Microwave safe?

Not recommended – clay is a highly conductive material and the piece will become very hot to the touch.
