Kurinuki Matcha Bowl Nº4 is a hand-carved, sculptural ceramic bowl crafted using the Japanese kurinuki technique. Carved from a black stoneware, the form is shaped intuitively, resulting in a strong, organic presence that feels closer to a small sculpture than conventional tableware.

Unlike other pottery techniques, kurinuki begins with a solid block of clay. The bowl is slowly carved from a single mass of stoneware, allowing the form to emerge through subtraction rather than addition. This intuitive process creates textured, sculptural surfaces and organic asymmetry, as the material and hands guide its character.

Depending on the lighting, this bowl may appear evenly black or, in the sunlight, reveal hints of blue and patches of deep dark brown.

Inspired by traditional matcha bowls, it is designed for both whisking and sipping (without a spout), supporting a quiet, intentional tea ritual. The bowl invites a moment of pause — to observe its textures, decoration, and form, and to settle into presence before the first sip.

This bowl has a half-cylindrical shape (hantsutsu-gata chawan), with straighter sides and a flatter bottom, making it easier to whisk matcha.

This is a single-made, one-off object. While an identical piece cannot be reproduced, pre-order for a similar style can be discussed via email.

Product care

– Although Ondou products are intended for everyday use, they are also functional art objects and require handling with care. While the high-fired stoneware ceramic is extremely durable and can resist scratches and common damages, it is still brittle and can break when too much force is applied.
– Avoid exposing your pottery to sudden temperature changes, such as placing a cold dish in the microwave or a hot dish in cold water, as this can cause thermal shock and damage.
– Avoid using harsh metal sponges on the highly decorated surface of the bowl.

Dishwasher safe?

Yes, but be aware that the dishwasher may damage the decorated surface. Use at your own discretion.

Microwave safe?

Not recommended – clay is a highly conductive material and the piece will become very hot to the touch.
