Kurinuki Cup Nº15 is a hand-carved sculptural ceramic cup crafted using the Japanese kurinuki technique. It has a cylindrical form with organic, wavy carvings — each piece carrying its own natural asymmetry in shape and carving.

The exterior displays rich carving, partially left unglazed to reveal the character and texture of the beige stoneware — creating a contrast between the raw clay and the glazed surface. The interior and parts of the exterior are finished with a transparent glaze that partly showcases pearlescent and sandy beige tones. The sculptural carving results in a satisfyingly weighty presence in the hand.

What is kurinuki? Unlike other pottery techniques — where forms are built up from nothing — kurinuki begins with a solid block of clay. Each piece is slowly carved from a single mass of stoneware until the form reveals itself. This intuitive process creates textured, sculptural surfaces and organic asymmetry, as the material and hands guide its character. No two pieces are exactly alike.

Each cup is individually numbered within the limited Nº15 series.

Product care

Ondou pieces are crafted as functional art objects. While made from high-fired stoneware fired to 1220 °C — which makes them highly durable and resistant to everyday wear — they are still ceramic and can break if dropped or subjected to strong impact. With proper care, they will last for many years.
GENERAL CARE
– Avoid sudden temperature changes (thermal shock). For example, do not pour boiling water into a cup that has been stored in the fridge, and avoid running cold water over a very hot piece.
– Wash using a soft sponge and mild detergent. Avoid abrasive metal scrubbers, especially on decorated or textured surfaces.
– Do not leave pieces soaking in a sink with food residues for extended periods — basic good hygiene.
– Allow the piece to dry fully before storing in a closed cabinet.

Dishwasher use

Yes, but hand-washing is recommended. Dishwashers and harsh detergents won't break the item itself, but they can gradually soften or wear down the decoration and alter its original finish. Use at your own discretion.

Microwave use

Not recommended – clay is a highly conductive material and the piece will become very hot to the touch.

Handmade nature

Each item is handmade and shows the marks of this process, including intentional “imperfections.” The products pictured reflect the overall shape, size and color of the piece. However, each item is unique, with differences in glaze, texture and slight variations in size, shape and capacity. Colors may also appear differently depending on lighting conditions and your screen. Dimensional variations can be up to ~1cm, capacity ~50ml, and weight ~50g.
