Ondou pieces are crafted as functional art objects — durable, waterproof, made from high-fired stoneware clay. Like all ceramics, they require gentle care, and with the right attention will live with you — and collect memories — for many years.

GENERAL CARE

I. Avoid sudden temperature changes — do not pour boiling water into a ice-cold piece or cold water over a hot one.

II. Wash gently with a soft sponge and mild detergent. Avoid metal scrubbers, especially on textured, unglazed or matt surfaces.

III. Avoid soaking in a sink with food residues — basic hygiene applies as with any kitchenware.

DISHWASHER USE

Smaller functional pieces are dishwasher safe unless marked as special care*.

However, hand-washing is recommended to preserve hand-made character. Dishwashers and harsh detergents won’t break the item itself, but they can gradually soften or wear down the decoration and alter its original finish. Use at your own discretion.

Larger pieces and vessels should be hand-washed. 

*Special care pieces include very textural, unglazed surfaces or pieces with wild clay surfaces — please refer to the individual product page for details.

MICROWAVE USE

Not recommended — the clay heats up significantly, and the piece may become too hot to handle safely.

OPTIONAL DEEP CARE

Some designs feature more porous surfaces or intentional glaze crazing — fine surface lines in the glaze that resemble cracks but do not affect the structural integrity of the piece. Over time, light surface staining from dark liquids may occur. To refresh the surface, the piece can be soaked in rice-washing water (the starchy water from rinsing rice), either cold or warm. The natural starches help draw out minor impurities and may subtly smooth the surface. This traditional method is gentle and non-permanent, but can help maintain the appearance of ceramics over time. Alternatively, the surface can be gently cleaned using baking soda.
