Kurinuki Matcha Bowl Nº18 is a hand-carved, sculptural ceramic bowl crafted using the Japanese kurinuki technique. Carved from a brick-red stoneware with expressive carvings and textured areas, its sculptural presence gives it a satisfying weight in the hands.

The exterior of this bowl is left unglazed, revealing various raw clay textures and visible marks of the carving process. The cuts emphasize the movement of the hand and the natural resistance of the material. The interior and rim are finished with a matte white glaze with a porous surface that naturally develops the subtle shade over time.

Inspired by traditional matcha bowls, it is designed for both whisking and drinking (without a spout), inviting a moment of pause — to observe its textures, decoration, and form, and to settle into presence before the first sip.

It is marked on the base with its design number.

What is kurinuki?

Unlike other pottery techniques, kurinuki begins with a solid block of clay. The bowl is slowly carved from a single mass of stoneware, allowing the form to emerge through subtraction rather than addition. This intuitive process creates textured, sculptural surfaces and organic asymmetry, as the material and hands guide its character.

A one-of-a-kind piece — this bowl is made individually and is not restocked after it is sold. However, while it cannot be reproduced in an exact manner, custom orders for a similar piece can be discussed via email.

Product care

Ondou pieces are crafted as functional art objects. While made from high-fired stoneware fired to 1220 °C — which makes them highly durable and resistant to everyday wear — they are still ceramic and can break if dropped or subjected to strong impact. With proper care, they will last for many years.
GENERAL CARE
– Avoid sudden temperature changes (thermal shock). For example, do not pour boiling water into a cup that has been stored in the fridge, and avoid running cold water over a very hot piece.
– Wash using a soft sponge and mild detergent. Avoid abrasive metal scrubbers, especially on decorated or textured surfaces.
– Do not leave pieces soaking in a sink with food residues for extended periods — basic good hygiene.
– Allow the piece to dry fully before storing in a closed cabinet.

OPTIONAL DEEP CARE
– Over time, the porous and/or surfaces with crazing lines may develop light staining from dark liquids. To refresh the surface, the piece can be soaked in rice-washing water (the starchy water from rinsing rice), either cold or warm. The natural starches help draw out minor impurities and subtly smooth the surface. This traditional method is gentle and non-permanent, but can help maintain the appearance of ceramics over time. Alternatively, the surface can be gently cleaned using baking soda.

Dishwasher use

Yes, but hand-washing is recommended. Dishwashers and harsh detergents won't break the item itself, but they can gradually soften or wear down the decoration/glaze and alter its original finish. Use at your own discretion.

Microwave use

Not recommended – clay is a highly conductive material and the piece will become very hot to the touch.

Handmade nature

Each item is handmade and shows the marks of this process, including intentional “imperfections.” Colors may also appear differently depending on lighting conditions and your screen.
