Kurinuki Matcha Bowl Nº20 is a hand-carved, sculptural ceramic bowl crafted using the Japanese kurinuki technique. Carved from a brick-red stoneware with a deeply cracked surface, its sculptural presence gives it a satisfying weight in the hands.

The exterior is finished with wild clay collected locally in Lithuania by Ondou, which after high firing transforms into a natural satin glaze — adding a subtle dark brown that contrasts with the brick-red stoneware and cracks beneath. The interior and rim are finished with a glossy rust brown glaze.

Inspired by traditional matcha bowls, it is designed for both whisking and sipping. It has no spout — designed equally for whisking and sipping, inviting a moment of pause — to observe its textures, decoration, and form, and to settle into presence before the first sip.

It is marked on the base with its design number.

What is kurinuki?

Unlike other pottery techniques, kurinuki begins with a solid block of clay. The bowl is slowly carved from a single mass of stoneware, allowing the form to emerge through subtraction rather than addition. This intuitive process creates textured, sculptural surfaces and organic asymmetry, as the material and hands guide its character.
